Those of you that will be at work on 11-13-08 may notice quite a few conspicuous absences. In less than two days it will be time for the new World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. It used to be that when a new computer game like WoW was realeased it would only mean that you local IT department would be empty, but not so any more. World of Warcraft has over 11 million players that shell out the $15 monthly fee and a great many of those people will not being doing anything else on 11-13.
Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion to the incredibly popular MMORPG and will feature content mainly for players who are already at level 55 in the original game. If a player has a level 55 character they will be allowed to try the expansion's newest character build, the Death Knight. The Death Knight is a servant of the Lich King and will be a very malevolent force in the game. Those players not into acts of torture and murdering innocents may want to skip the Death Knight character and instead focus on the new features with their existing characters. Wrath of the Lich King brings with it the ability to advance your characters from the level 70 cap to a new level 80 cap and all new areas to try out your new strength. Other features that players can look forward to are mounted aerial combat, new Player versus Player zones, and new “Phasing” technology. Phasing allows players who are at different plot points in quests to see different things when they are in towns. That means that if a town is under siege at your point in the game you may see burning buildings and have shops that are all closed. Other players who haven't advanced to that point will see things as usual. Players who are on different phases will also not be able to see/interact with each other. It's a very interesting new feature that people who have been playing the game since its debut in 2004 will either love, or hate. So, for those of you not playing WoW, look to pick up the slack at work on Thursday. For those of you not yet at level 55 in WoW, you have some work to do in the next day and a half. And for those already geared up and at level 55 or higher, rest up because you probably won't be sleeping much for a while.
